armature
Draft – to be validatedn. f. · reinforcement · rebar (US, individual steel bar) · armatures en attente: starter rebars
Definition
Barres d'acier placées dans le béton pour reprendre les efforts de traction. L'ensemble des armatures d'un élément forme son ferraillage. On distingue les armatures longitudinales (les barres principales) et les cadres ou étriers (qui entourent les barres).
Steel bars placed inside concrete to carry the tensile forces. All the bars of one element together form its iron framework (ferraillage). A distinction is made between the longitudinal bars (the main bars) and the stirrups (US) or links (UK), which wrap around them.

Nuances and pitfalls
False friend. In English, armature mostly means the internal frame of a sculpture or the rotating part of an electric motor, not the steel in a structure. For concrete, say reinforcement or, in the US, rebar. To be confirmed by the US and UK reviewers.
Armatures, ferraillage, ferrailleur. The armatures are the bars; the ferraillage is all the bars of a structure; the ferrailleur is the worker who places them. In English, rebar is the bar and reinforcement the whole. To be confirmed by the reviewers.
Cadre and étrier. In English, both are translated as stirrup (US) or link (UK). To be confirmed by the US and UK reviewers.
