Definition
Document par lequel l'entreprise demande le paiement des travaux réalisés pendant une période, en général chaque mois. Elle est vérifiée par la maîtrise d'œuvre, qui l'accepte ou la corrige, puis transmise au maître d'ouvrage pour paiement. Le total des situations, ajusté à la fin du chantier, forme le décompte général.
The document by which the contractor asks for payment of the work done during a period, usually each month. The design team checks it and accepts or corrects it, then it goes to the owner for payment. The total of the situations, adjusted at the end of the works, makes up the décompte général (final account).

Nuances and pitfalls
Situation, acompte, décompte. The situation (n. f.) is the payment request for a period; the acompte (n. m.) is the sum paid as a result; the décompte général (n. m.) (or DGD) is the final account of the contract.
Who does what? The contractor draws up the situation; the design team checks it and fixes the amount; the owner pays. For public contracts, payment deadlines apply.
